Journey to Success - An Information Management Capability Development Framework - By Vladimir Videnovic, Institute for Information Management. January 2019

In this paper Vladimir Videnovic declares that the importance of Information is not new. From the beginning, this millennium was characterised by processes moving online and systems of record transitioning to the digital realm. Although information was identified as an essential corporate asset almost two decades ago and information management was claimed to be a top strategic priority in both public and commercial sectors, most organisations still struggle to improve the maturity of their information management capability.

With this in mind and 15 years of observing organisations in the public and commercial sectors in the ANZ and ASEAN regions, Vladimir Videnovic, Institute for Information Management has put together a paper titled "Journey to Success – an Information Management Capability Development Framework".  The paper proposes a multi-faceted approach in establishing a modern information management capability. It observes common organisational challenges in the handling of information.  Further, the Journey to Success - an Information Management Capability Development Framework aims to deliver a roadmap for an optimal Information Environment.  An Information Environment that is based on four principles with a focus on the Right Approach, building the Right Team, being supported by the Right Technology in order to deliver the Right Results.

Vladimir observes how top performing organisations utilised organisational capabilities and leveraged their technology enablers in order to create and implement information strategies.  Strategies that facilitate organisations to enhance capturing quality data into their transactional systems, enabling them to provide better access to information and to better identify how to transform their data for reporting and processed into information and intelligence.  Strategies that provided better access to information, allowing them to efficiently use good quality information, gain appropriate business insights and continuously optimise their performance.  On the other hand Vladimir also notes that many organisations lacked an understanding of the importance of information to their business and did not have a defined information strategy.

The paper "Journey to Success – an Information Management Capability Development Framework" transforms the research findings and results by Vladimir into an approach to achieving an optimal information eco-system, enabling organisation to become information-powered and continuously review and optimise its information management capability. His paper provides the basis for building a modern information environment, addressing the current and future information needs of an organisation.  It suggests a multi-faceted approach in establishing a modern information management capability using the Information Management Capability Development Framework.
