Tony Krizan is substantively Executive Director Corporate Operations and Information, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Information Officer of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

Tony is temporarily leading the Technology and Transformation Branch, as CIO, during an intensive period of deployment of NHMRC’s new grants management solution, Sapphire.

Tony has experience across a number of industries, featuring 28 years in the public sector across a broad range of policy, program and corporate roles in the Finance, Employment, Education and Training and Health and Ageing portfolios.  Data and information management have been central across all of Tony’s public sector responsibilities.

NHMRC fosters intelligence development as it funds and draws on the intellectual capital of Australia’s world leading health and medical researchers.
A few years ago, when NHMRC embarked on the development of machine learning algorithms to assist in resource-consuming tasks, one of the initial concerns was how these Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications would impact on the existing personnel.

Over time, the number of grant applications increased significantly and the level of complexity and sophistication of these applications has also grown.  The ‘traditional’ manual process required a team of 20 people to perform over 500 hours of effort to complete the task of analysing applications. With the introduction of AI, the time required to perform the same job was reduced down to six hours!

In his keynote, Tony will outline a number of NHMRC developments using advanced analytics, including natural language processing and machine learning, to better manage and synthesise data, accelerate operations and enhance decision making at the organisational level.  The presentation will also reflect briefly on key lessons and future potential.

IIM WA Branch brings you the first of three Professional Networking and Development events for 2019 on Demystifying Intelligent Information Management.

The first breakfast event is on Machine Learning and Auto-Classification.

Initially you will hear from two Presenters who will discuss some of the challenges and practical applications of Machine Learning and Auto-Classification:

• Sheryl Gourdis, Manager Corporate Information (Housing) Department of Communities

Sheryl Gourdis has been in the public service for over 30 years mostly spent as a records practitioner and manager. 
In 1996 Sheryl commenced her role as Manager Corporate Information with the Housing Authority, now part of the Department of Communities.
During her time with the department, Sheryl has:

• Led the implementation of a full organisational wide EDRMs, including integration with many line-of-business systems.
• Built and led teams which include the following skill sets:

• Technologists who develop and support the automation initiatives which also includes software development.
• Educators and Trainers who develop online training materials and deliver face to face training to the organisation to inform the business how they are to treat the organisation’s evidence of its business transactions (records) thereby increasing business efficiency and reducing risks to them and the organisation.

• Records Management Practitioners, who undertake the maintenance and monitoring of the organisations recordkeeping program and systems.
• Supported the Department towards making its Digital Transformation by:

• Wherever possible removing the need to use hard copy documents or records except as printed duplicates which can then be legitimately discarded.
• Introducing, refining and automating digital recordkeeping, including implementing a digitisation program.
• Optimising the Department’s core business processes by applying automation technologies and concepts such as auto-classification and machine learning to deliver cost effective and efficient business processes to the organisation.  

• Participated in many industry forums and workshops
• Facilitated the working group, including SRO participation, for the development of legal clauses for recordkeeping of outsourced functions

• Shane Culbertson, Information Manager Main Roads WA

Shane is the Information Manager at Main Roads WA, delivering records management and library services.  Shane has a real passion and natural affiliation for all things ‘Information’, encompassing  library and records management, content management, knowledge management and corporate communications.
 
Shane has over 40 years’ experience and during that time he has:

• Managed multiple EDMS, CMS. Imaging and Workflow implementations and their continual upgrades in 3 different agencies
• Developed and implemented a number of business improvement initiatives including machine learning and forms of auto-classification.
• Designed and implemented a Knowledge Repository and the Shared Services Oracle Knowledge Base previously used by all Government agencies
• Developed User Requirements and Business Rules for a multitude of IM systems
• Recognised for incorporating compliance requirements into Government Procurement contracting and the General Conditions of Contract used across WA Government
• Conducted tenders for Offsite Storage, Imaging, Workflow. Records Management  and Content Management Systems
• Managed WA.gov.au and Contact Centre information in the Shared Services E-Business Portal
• Co-ordinated multiple system and website Health Checks and system improvements
• Maintained externally audited bi-annual RM Quality certification to ISO:2015 at Main Roads

In addition, Shane has supported Main Roads in being successfully awarded the SRC Excellence Award for Compliance Reporting in 2016 and the Gold Award for agencies >1K employees for the last 3 years, Best Annual Report 2017, Allan Skinner Trophy 2019 together with an SRC Special Commendation for Excellence in Compliance Reporting in 2019. 
 
Shane gained professional membership to RIMPA in 1992 and served on WA Branch Council from 1990 until 2003 as their Strategic Planning Coordinator, Marketing Coordinator, Branch Counsellor and representative on the WA Standing Committee on Public Records (now SRAC).

He also chaired the Records & Information Management Liaison Group during 2004 and recently became a committee member of IIM WA.

Next, you will hear from Adam Niedzwiedz from Process Automation Group outlining the fundamental requirements for these powerful emerging technologies and possible barriers to success, and how these technologies can benefit your organisation. 

Lastly you will hear from Microfocus who will demonstrate and discuss Microfocus Content Manager (TRIM) modules as outlined below:

1. The ControlPoint module identifies and deletes documents on network shares that have already been put into Content Manager.  ControlPoint can also help identify records that have been classified incorrectly, reduce the chance of duplicate documents being stored and streamline content migration.
2. 
   The Auto Classification module leverages the machine learning capabilities of the indexing engine. Records can be captured into high-level entry points of the business classification and be automatically reclassified into a lower-level branch.

The second in the series IIM's Demystifying Intelligent Information Management

David Dunn from Smart Office Systems and the City of Nedlands Executive Director and the City's Information Analyst will present:

Dr. Neil Brittliff has worked in numerous government departments largely in the Law Enforcement and Health sector.  Five years ago, Neil was awarded a PhD from the University of Canberra on his work on the application of machine learning algorithms on data that has not undergone the traditional data cleansing processes. For the last three years, Neil Brittliff is a Data Scientist and Cloud Solution Architect with Microsoft.

About

Hackathon offers participants the possibility to work in small teams and employ innovative thinking to boost collective creativity and use it to solve business problems. The key objective is to create possible solutions in the form of prototypes that can be used as a minimal viable product to address the defined problem.

In this session, Claude Colasante from AUSTRAC will present examples of successful hackathons that enabled participants to apply a systematic creativity and innovation to build capabilities to predict, discover and fight fraud and crime.  Claude will also share how the Financial Intelligence Unit applies advanced analytics and leverage big data opportunities to build intelligence-led approaches as a platform for the effective detection and monitoring of criminal networks.

Claude Colasante joined AUSTRAC in 2003 as the National Manager of the Intelligence branch and held various senior positions.  In his role Director Intelligence, Money Laundering Criminal Targeting within AUSTRAC's Intelligence division, one of his key areas of focus is how to build, design and use analytics to identify money laundering, terrorist financing and crime risks. 

Claude’s branch leads innovation at AUSTRAC by co-designing useful solutions with its customers to enable them to make faster, better and more effective decisions through Innovation, Leadership and Analytics.

Kriti Sharma is an Artificial Intelligence expert and a leading global voice on ethical technology and its impact on society. 
 In her keynote session, Kriti takes the focus away from the panic of AI and the robots taking over and instead discusses the importance of taking the human bias out of AI. Kriti will explore the need to create AI using diverse teams, from diverse backgrounds and experiences, in order to maximise the positive potential of this transformative technology and how it can and is being used for world-changing social good.

Speaker Michael Scheelhardt
Michael Scheelhardt is the Digital Director at Oracle across APAC region and responsible for Business Development of emerging technologies such as Chatbots/AI, Blockchain and Modern Application Development.  His experience within Innovation Management and Strategic Business Development helps clients with a direction to mature their organizations in the Digital Economy and open new business opportunities and revenue streams across their ecosystems.

Michael’s approach goes beyond features and functions and rather provides a point of view that amplifies outcomes. He holds a Master’s in Management of Innovation and Business Development from Copenhagen Business School and co-developed the strategy to launch the “Beo-Reader”, a tablet similar to Apple iPad, for Danish Bang & Olufsen.

Richard Lucas, PhD, has over 40 years experience working and teaching in the ICT field.
As an ICT professional, his roles included: a project team leader, senior systems analyst, systems engineer, programmer and instructor.  These roles and projects have been in the fields of Agriculture, Defence, Electoral Systems, Engineering,  Health,  Health Insurance and Taxation.  Richard has worked in the public and private sectors as both an employee and an independent consultant.

As an academic, Richard has, for more than 25 years, taught ethics and social responsibility to ICT students at the professional, vocational, and university levels in Europe and Australia.

He has conducted research into the ethics of ICT, had this research published in international journals and presented at international conferences.

Richard is the Principal of The Ethics Consultancy (https://ethicsconsultancy.com.au) which offers a wide variety of ethics related programs.
