President's Message

Robine Polach

National President & Chair

Dear Member,

Under the leadership of several Presidents, IIM has established itself as the definitive body representing the interests of Information Management Professionals.

One of the primary objectives of IIM is to promote innovative applications of information systems and to be the conduit for members to network and share their experiences with other members. IIM achieves this by organising conferences, seminars and events focussing on practical solutions and experiences. This has only been possible because of the knowledge of the Board and Committees throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Collectively, IIM's members have  accumulated a wealth of experience in all areas of information management including strategy development, knowledge management, content management, records management, library management, email management, outsourcing, general computing, IT and a whole lot more. Each member of our Board and Committees are experts within their own fields and have worked in senior roles across all levels of government and private industry. The Board and Committees know the industry and the language which helps them to guide and deliver the IIM member's programme of events.

As the new President of IIM, I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to work with these people. I would like to thank each and every one of them for their contributions over the years.

IIM also endorses third-party events according to very strict criteria including quality and relevance to our members. When endorsing conferences IIM negotiates discount rates for our members as an added benefit to your IIM Membership. Details on some of these conferences appear below.

As this is the last Newsletter for 2006, I would like to thank the IIM Members for their continued support and I would like to wish you all a happy and safe holiday season and a prosperous 2006.

Regards

Robine Polach

President

2005 Cohasset ARMA AIIM Electronic Records Management Survey

Whilst the survey is US based it probably has some relevance In Australia.

Despite increased pressure from regulators and courts, nearly half of American companies still haven't adopted records retention policies for e-mail and other electronic documents.

In a new survey of 2,100 records and information managers, 43 percent said their company does not include electronic records in its retention and destruction schedules. Although this is a slight increase (4%) over 2003, it clearly illustrates that this remains a serious issue for many organizations.

AIIM - The Enterprise Content Management Association and ARMA International co-sponsored the survey, which was conducted by Cohasset Associates Inc. in April 2005.

Searching for utopia - the future of search
Effective business or enterprise search, for many organisations, implies much more than simply typing in a keyword and pressing 'go', as most users do when searching the World Wide Web. It requires the ability to retrieve relevant information in a timely manner across multiple data repositories and involves the use of various technologies such as content classification, categorisation and clustering; fact and entity extraction; metadata and taxonomy management; visualisation and personalised search.
This conference will focus on the key considerations for ensuring effective search across your enterprise as well as looking at the future developments in the search market.

Enterprise Content Management
Content management technologies have moved significantly over the last few years, evolving from an array of disparate products into multi-capacity platforms capable of helping users with a broader range of business challenges than ever before. Amongst those core business challenges is the need to improve overall workplace productivity, drive process efficiency and ensure compliance with regulations governing the preservation and authenticity of business information.
The Australian marketplace has come to recognise that Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is a requisite technology that enables organisations to manage electronic content without hindering operational business needs. However the challenge lies in deploying  ECM solutions on a truly enterprise-wide basis so as to maximise the benefits this technology can afford.
This national congress will profile the successes of leading national and international ECM champions, in addition to showcasing practical solutions and tools that potential adopters could deploy.
Date: 19 - 21 June 2006
Location: Sydney
