IIM Newsletter September 2009

    IIM Newsletter September 2009

Vladimir Videnovic
National President

Dear IIM members and friends

Welcome to the September issue of the IIM newsletter.

IIM has submitted its response to the Government 2.0 Issues Paper. I would like to thank all the members that submitted their views and comments and made valuable contributions to our response. In this response, we have identified the OECD principles that are of the most relevance to IIM members and organisations (click here to see the complete IIM response submitted to the Government 2.0 Taskforce).

One of the results of this activity is a change to the ACT Conference 2009 program, which now includes a panel discussion on “Freedom of Information and Web 2.0”. This open discussion will be led by an impressive panel made of representatives from the Institute for Information Management, Record Managers of Association of Australasia, National Archives of Australia, Government, information management vendors and practitioners. Our members who are not able to come to the conference can still ask relevant questions to this panel by completing the IIM survey, available here.

There are only 22 days left before the IIM Annual Conference 2009. The ACT Conference Program Committee is working hard on the final preparations for the conference, which includes finalisation of the conference program, negotiations with the venue, sponsors, speakers and the last campaign for the conference delegates. This year we have had a tremendous response to the call for papers, which has resulted in a very interesting program and an outstanding set of speakers and panellists. Late week we have faced an additional challenge when the Rydges Lakeside Hotel informed us that their massive  renovations would not be complete before our conference. We have agreed to move the conference to the Rydges Capital Hill.

We are pleased to inform all members who plan to attend this conference that it will be held at even more exclusive conference venue at Rydges Capital Hill in Forrest. The Conference Program Committee has decided to extend the regular registration period to COB Tuesday, 22nd October. If you want to attend and have not registered yet, please do so before then in order to be eligible to the discounted rate. To see more details, including the final program, and to register, click here.

Finally, I would like to ask all of you to complete our 2009 survey that is available here.

Please note that it takes less then 10 minutes to complete. This survey is your opportunity to direct questions to the IIM ACT Conference 2009 panel and also to assist us to formulate the program of activities in 2010.

Yours sincerely

The Institute For Information Management surveys information management professionals regularly to ensure our events and conferences remain relevant to our audience.

Please complete this brief survey to help us organise better events in the future.

The Institute for Information Management (IIM) thanks the Government 2.0 Taskforce for the opportunity to participate in the Taskforce and to respond to the Issues Paper. The IIM, as a volunteer-led, not-for-profit, support organisation representing information workers across Australia, is proud to present the various views of its membership. In order to canvas opinions, IIM offered its members the opportunity of assessing the Issues Paper together with the outcomes of the Taskforce Roundtables, and to add their views based on individual knowledge and experience. This response presents views on the OECD Principles that are of the most relevance to IIM members and organisations. Our comments have been prioritised in accordance to their relevance to IIM members.

About IIM
The IIM is the leading professional organisation in Australia dedicated to assisting members and other information management professionals to use information effectively and to help them with their interaction with the information industry.

IIM Comments
The following areas have been identified as of prime relevance to the IIM and its members:
  • Openness
  • Access and transparent conditions for re-use
  • Asset lists
  • Quality
  • Integrity
  • Public private partnerships
  • Best practices.
The IIM recognises and supports the Government's package of Information Reforms. In particular we congratulate Government for the innovative use of technologies and channels to collaborate with citizens and deliver services and information more efficiently.

The main issues from the IIM perspective are related to the achieving the right balance of the following principles:
  • Management of risk instead of risk aversion
  • Streamlined business processes against complex approval processes

o           Informal communication channels versus threat of litigation or embarrassment and risk-adverse controls in government processes.

The IIM welcomes an opportunity to facilitate an ongoing dialogue between IIM members and organisations and Government 2.0 initiative. The IIM intents to establish a Web2.0 environment, which will both allow exchange of opinions as well as be able to demonstrate the abilities of Web2.0 technology. This new environment will be officially demonstrated at the IIM Annual Conference in Canberra on 7th of October 2009. This environment will be made available for the exchange of information between Government and our members.

The IIM look forward to continuous dialogue with Government in addressing the challenges of modern use and dissemination of information and improving the way government engages with citizens.

National Archives of Australia - "Keep The Knowledge"

The National Archives is urging all Australian Government employees ‘keep the knowledge’ and has created a new training package to ensure they understand their records management responsibilities.

The Keep the Knowledge – make a record! training package, including a slideshow and presenter’s guide, online eLearning module, reference card and promotional posters, has been made available to Australian Government agencies. The key message is that everyone working for the Australian Government – from entry level to agency heads – has a responsibility to make and keep records of their work.

The package is aimed at everyone who works for the Australian Government, and emphasises emails and other types of digital records that are increasingly important to government business. It includes practical information and tips such as effective naming of records.
