President's Message

Robine Polach

National President

Dear Member,

During the past year the National Board of IIM met on 6 occasions with most of them  conducted via teleconference. The board meet on the evening of the 14th August, the first evening of the IIM National Conference. During this meeting we confirmed the position of a Vice-President and accepted the nomination of Terry Gaston for the position.

I would like to thank all the Directors that have worked with me over the past twelve months.
The current board stands at:

Ms Robine Polach - President

Mr Ben Tosetto - Director, Finance and Governance

Mr Greg Wilson - Director, Industry and Development and Regional Director Vic/Tas

Mr Peter Goddard - Director, Membership

Mr Paul Fendley - Director, Marketing

Mr Terry Gaston - Vice President and Regional Director, WA

Mr Colin Towns - Regional Director, ACT

Ms Kerry Nichols - Director, Service Delivery

Ms Deborah Holtham - Director, Service Delivery

Mr Robert Goode - Immediate Past President

This year we have grown by one and welcome Ms Deborah Holtham, as the Director, Service Delivery.

IIM held a National Conference in Canberra over the period of 14 - 16 August. The conference was a success and complemented the State events. Thank you to the ACT Conference Committee for a job well done and for your personal efforts in making the IIM National Conference a success.

The State committees worked tirelessly to produce forums which provide members and guest an opportunity to learn and meet other information professionals. Thank you to all the Branch Committees for your efforts. It is through your individual contributions and the variety of programmes that we are able to promote 'best practice' within the information management industry.

IIM, after such a successful co-hosting in 2006, joined again with the corollary of information professional organisations to provide a well organised and stimulating program of events during the 'Information Awareness Month' (IAM).

IIM continues to grow and I welcome all our new members.
To all our members, thank you for your continued membership and support.

IIM welcomes feedback and suggestions from its members. With this in mind, during the year, the IIM website underwent a total transition. The whole site was rethought and remodelled. Our goal is to generate better communication and provide members with an avenue to not only enhance your knowledge but also to contribute some of your own knowledge and experience to the IIM Community. If when you have visited the site you find that it has not the information that at present you need then visit 'Contribute' go to 'Feedback & Queries' please do not hesitate to place in your query for IIM has a large network and I feel sure that they will be able to find someone who will help or at least point the way.

Over the year IIM worked with many sponsors and I would like to thank them for there ongoing support. The sponsors enable IIM to present forums of a high calibre for our members and guests.

MOU's have been sent to many of the other professional groups, to encourage sharing and working together for the mutual benefit of our members.

Thank you also to the Secretariat for continued support of the IIM and with a new agreement that support will continue for another 3 years.

This will be my last report as the President of IIM. I am retiring from this position but will for an interim period provide advice and guidance to our incoming President.

I welcome the new President I feel sure that under their stewardship IIM will continue to grow and remain relevant to members.

Robine Polach

President

2007 Cohasset ARMA AIIM Electronic Records Management Survey - Call for Collaboration

The survey's conclusions are based on data compiled from more than 1600 respondents in 2007 and a total of more than 5500 in the survey's four prior years - 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2005.

Here are this survey's five major conclusions :

1. Most organizations have serious operational shortfalls regarding the processes by which they manage electronic records.

2. Confirmation that some core deficiencies in records management program components have begun to be addressed - but the overall effectiveness of the programs with regard to life cycle management of electronic records remains bleak.

3. Evidence of "silos" of expertise persists.

4. The number and magnitude of organizational and operational problems reflected in the survey findings collectively represent stunning business risks. Senior management must consider these risks unacceptable to have and untenable to continue.

5. The integration of electronic records into the organization's records management program should be a priority.
