Robine Polach
National President

Dear Member,

In the first year as President I have found change is very slow in coming in IIM. I feel that we need to revisit our commonly shared purpose of what IIM stands for and, what the goals and mission of IIM should be.

As your President and, speaking with others in the industry, I believe that it is time to review our mission statement and goals. The objectives for reviewing IIM's mission statement and goals are:
  • To promote awareness and help others to better understand IIM;
  • Enable IIM members to assess current capabilities;
  • Develop guidance to information practitioners on how to improve their practices in managing information resources;
  • Provide benchmarks that will support our state committees and members;
  • Advance IIM within the IM environment;
  • Deliver and add value to the IM industry;
  • Inspire people to participate in IIM.
By doing this review IIM will gain a better understanding of:
IM environment;
  • Provide knowledge of IM needs and requirements;
  • Assist the Board and State Committees of IIM in determining what activities better align to IIM objectives; and
  • Equip us with the ability to capitalise on opportunities now and in the future.
Some thoughts on the environment:- World wide, compliance concerns are driving organisations into changing the way they manage information. IM has new legal, regulatory and business requirements in the management of information. There have been some lawsuits and fines which have bought the management of information into the forefront. Availability and growth of electronic records, the issue of emails, and the many other obstacles and hurdles that Information professionals need to deal with.

Media scrutiny, government monitoring, and regulations all place pressure on Information professionals. IM professional need to find ways in which to overcome the hurdle of how to convince upper management and then in turn employees, that it is important to them and the future of the organisations they work for, to have a vested interest in the better management of information.

Globalisation, technological change, corporate governance, financial accountability, terrorism, bio-security and global warming, all affect the management of information. These all need to be taken into account when an information professional pulls together a strategy to manage information resources within an organisation.

Please remember it is up to IIM members to communicate their thoughts and ideas and get involved. Have input into the process by emailing me (Robine) on robinep@internode.on.net

In developing an industry vision we should keep in mind all that I mentioned and also the governments vision and policy for the management of information especially the document on "Australian Government: Information Interoperability Framework" compiled by AGIMO http://www.agimo.gov.au/publications/2006/may/iif

Suggestions on changes will be synthesized and developed so that the vision embodies views put forward.

The future of IIM looks good and with a more representative mission statement and goals I believe we will grow stronger.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DATA INTEGRATION
Author: Robine Polach, President IIM
Co-author Mark Rodgers, Councillor ACT IIM Committee
Organisations are tackling issues on how to deliver services cost-effectively. This depends on effective information flows with correct information. Most people intuitively understand the value of concepts such as having a single authoritative source of information and reducing duplication of data holdings. They also usually understand the value of being able to use information independently of the system that captured it. Yet what many organisations have are heterogeneous IT systems with duplication of data and non-uniform terminology/metadata. This data is stored in a variety of sources, from operational systems to LAN drives. When you have so much data in different systems you inevitable face data integration issues, data quality issues and the issue of same data kept in different systems which create difficulties in correctly matching data. What organisations require as a starting point is a full understanding of their data holdings.
